Other Important Things to Know
All storage sheds (over 80 sq ft in the City Limits or over 120 sq ft in the ETJ), decks, patio covers, swimming pools (both above-ground and in-ground), additions and remodels require building permits issued by the City.
  • Accessory structures cannot be placed within a Public Utility Easment (P.U.E.) and must meet minumium setback requirements.  A plot plan is required to be submitted on ALL accessory structures whether a permit is required or not.
  • General contractor and subcontractors (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, irrigation, and outside utilities) information is not required at time of application. However, this information must be provided prior to the issuance of the permit. A contractor information form must be completed if the contractor has never pulled permits before or needs to update an existing contractor file of record.  There is no fee related to the registeration of information.
  • All contractors pulling permits, with the exception of commercial general contractors, must be licensed with the State of Texas and in some cases residential contactors if valuation of residential construction is over $10,000.00.  Homeowners are allowed to pull permits in some cases if they have filed a Homestead Exemption with the County, in addition, have also complete a notarized homestead affidavit  with our office.
  • If a commercial project is over $50,000, a Texas Department of License and Regulation (TDLR) project number is required. Contact the TDLR Architectural Barriers Section at 1-877-278-0999 for registry information or visit their website at http://www.tdlr.state.tx.us/ab/abrules.htm.
  • Senate Bill 5 mandates the submittal of Energy Calculations. US Dept. of Energy http://www.energycodes.gov.
  • Comments regarding construction plans are generally provided to the contact name on the application.
  • Asbestos survey needs to be submitted if walls are being removed.
  • If the project is over 5,000 sq. ft., the plans must be stamped and signed by an engineer.
  • When the permit has been reviewed and is approved, a call is placed to the general contractor or contact person. The "site copy" set of plans are returned and paperwork is attached with the instructions for calling inspections into the automated request system.
