Faulty Pump Control Causes Sewage Spill

Approximately 43,000 gallons of sewage spilled from a manhole next to Arrow Point Drive in Northeast Cedar Park on Tuesday, August 31, 2010. The spill was reported at 8:30 a.m. by a nearby business and was corrected immediately. Crews have determined the cause of the spill was the result of a faulty pump control mechanism at a nearby pump station.

The sewage spilled into Cottonwood Creek, where it flowed for about 1,200 feet before entering a 65 million gallon flood control reservoir. Water was removed from the area where the sewage entered the creek, and the ground around the leaking manhole was disinfected with sodium hypochlorite (bleach). City crews took samples from wells of property owners within 2 miles downstream of the spill and have been sent to a lab for analysis. Results should be back within the next 24 hours. The City’s public drinking water supply has not been affected.
